BILL BARRETT CORPORATION AWARDED NATIONAL ENVIRONMENTAL STEWARDSHIP
AWARD
Denver, CO. October 17, 2005- Denver-based Bill Barrett Corporation
(BBC) was recognized by the Interstate Oil and Gas Compact Commission
(IOGCC) for the company’s “superior environmental stewardship”
at the IOGCC’s annual meeting in Jackson Hole, Wyoming last
month.
The IOGCC commended the company for spending “more than $900,000
to clean up well sites neglected by previous owners, reroute and
realign roads to better protect natural artifacts and fund a culture
artifact inventory project. The corporation has also donated equipment
to a local college, and regularly contributes cash to numerous community
causes.” The award cited the company’s work on its West
Tavaputs Plateau project in Carbon County, Utah, including the company’s
mitigation, community outreach and data collection and sharing.
BBC Vice- President of Government and Regulatory Affairs Duane Zavadil
was presented the IOGCC’s 2005 Chairman’s Stewardship
Award by Wyoming Governor Dave Fruedenthal.
Zavadil noted that BBC’s efforts to protect the cultural artifacts
found in the company’s Stone Cabin 3D seismic survey provided
archeologists and anthropologists more information about the historic
artifacts in the area than ever before. He said BBC had hired three
consultants to monitor the seismic activities, another to monitor
ground motion thresholds, and yet another for archeological work.
The archeological work included establishing buffers to assure protection
of artifacts such as rock art and sensitive structures.
Zavadil said efforts to minimize vehicle traffic and other surface
disturbances involved deploying helicopters and heliportable equipment
for about half of the seismic survey activities, adding to the cost
of the project. When using existing roads to bring in equipment,
the Company spent $5,000 per mile to suppress dust.
The company also voluntarily re-aligned the road through Utah’s
Nine Mile Canyon, allowing people for the first time in decades
to contemplate the famed Hunter Panel rock art without having to
worry about traffic, noise or dust.
Additional mitigation, consultation and coordination involved 12
Native American tribes, four state agencies, three federal agencies,
14 organizations and three county governments.
